Shafaq News / Saad al-Mutlabi, a leader in the State of Law coalition led by Nuri al-Maliki announced on Saturday, that the Iraqi political forces are going through dialogues to find an alternative to Prime Minister-designate Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi, due to the difficulties faced by the latter in granting confidence to his government under the dome of Parliament.
Al-Muttalabi told Shafaq News, that "there are serious political dialogues among political forces of all components to find an alternative to Allawi, and these dialogues also witnessed the introduction of alternative names for Allawi."
He added that "there is a real difficulty in Allawi and his government obtaining the confidence of the Iraqi parliament, and for this political forces, they began to engage in dialogues to find an alternative, in anticipation of Allawi's failure to vote in Parliament or the failure of Parliament to hold a session, due to the political forces boycott voting to grant confidence.
The Iraqi Parliament failed in a session held on Thursday to give confidence to the transitional government assigned to Mohammed Tawfiq Allawi and the latter demanded to be postponed to tomorrow, Sunday, and the presidency agreed to do so.
The capital, Baghdad and the predominantly Shiite areas in the center and south of the country have been witnessing since early October of 2019 protests calling for the removal of the ruling political parties and forces accused by the demonstrators of corruption and association with external parties, as well as holding of early elections.
The protests, which resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of demonstrators, prompted former Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi to resign from his post under pressure from the Supreme Shia reference , Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani.
Muhammad Allawi has the support of two of the largest Shiite blocs in Iraq, namely, the "Towards Reform" coalition led by Muqtada al-Sadr, and the "Al-Fatah" coalition led by the Secretary-General of Badr Organization, Hadi al-Amiri.
Most of the Kurdish and Sunni political forces, in addition to the popular movement in the central and southern regions of Iraq, expressed their rejection of Muhammad Allawi's assumption of the presidency of the transitional government.
