Shafaq news/ A security source told Shafaq News agency that "demonstrators set fire to the Al-Rifai power station north of Nasiriya, in protest against the poor electric power situation in Dhi Qar Governorate".
Earlier, many governorates have been witnessing continuous protests for days, in protest against the power outage, in conjunction with high temperature.
Iraq suffers from a shortage of electric power, especially in the summer, as demand increases due to high temperatures that reach 50 degrees Celsius.
According to the Ministry of Electricity, Iraq's production of electrical energy is 13,500 megawatts, and it plans to add 3,500 megawatts this year, by introducing new generation units into service, but estimates indicate that the country needs more than 20,000 megawatts to reach self-sufficiency.
